Suppressed Perspectives
The Bible alleges that snakes are cursed. According to the old book, it is the curse that made snakes lose their legs. The narrative also suggests that snakes were cursed to feed on dust and that human beings should kill them whenever they see one. Genesis 3 verses 14 and 15 says:
The Lord God said to the snake, “Because you did this, you are the one cursed out of all the farm animals, out of all the wild animals. On your belly you will crawl, and dust you will eat every day of your life. I will put contempt between you and the woman, between your offspring and hers. They will strike your head, but you will strike at their heels.
It is ridiculous to think that the snake is cursed. Here are the reasons why the claim is misinformed:
- Snakes do not need legs. Imagine a python that has legs. Let us not even imagine.
- The snake moves perfectly without legs. If taking the legs away from the snake was meant as a punishment or a curse as written in the bible, then it failed terribly. Legs are meant for mobility, but they are not the only means. The same way a fish would not need legs, and a human wound not need fins, is the same way that a snake would not need legs. In fact, snakes are extremely agile, and most can outrun humans and other legged creatures.
- Sliding on the ground is much more fun and energy-efficient than moving on limbs, at least, it lowers the center of gravity. Snakes slide effortlessly, and they need less energy than legged animals do. As humans, we would have much better movement had we been able to crawl like snakes. In that respect, snakes are better than us.
- Even without legs, snakes can swim, climb trees, crawl at high speed, and even roll. In fact, most of what they do with their legless bodies is fun.
- Millipedes have between 30 and 400 legs, yet they are no better than a snake.
- Even though they crawl on dusty grounds, snakes do not get asthma, but humans do. I am not a veterinary officer to say that with authority, but I am sure that dust is more bothersome to humans than it is to snakes. So, crawling on the dust is not a problem for snakes. Sorry humans, you lose on this one.
- Snakes eat meat, not dust. Again, I am neither a veterinary officer, a game ranger, nor a nutritionist to tell you for sure whether snakes eat dust. I just doubt it because out of the many documentaries I have watched, none featured a snake feeding on dust. Rather, the creatures eat mice, rabbits, gazelles, and so on. Again, if indeed the biblical God commanded snakes to eat dust, he would be angered that the creatures defied his orders.
- Humans have defied orders to kill snakes; instead, they pet them, put them in snake parks, and try to take care of them. In fact, there are laws not to kill wild animals, and killing a snake could get you in jail. I know of laws that restrict you from killing snakes, but I am not aware of one requiring you to kill them other than the biblical one.
- Snakes defied the orders to bite the heel, most bite whichever body part closest to them without caring whether it is called the heel or not. Their biting instinct is barely different from that of other carnivores.
- Last but not least, the bible implies that the snake is the most cursed animal, “you are the one cursed out of all the farm animals, out of all the wild animals.” Nothing would be farther from the truth. Think of the gazelle, it eats grass; every other carnivore and omnivore wants to eat it right from birth. It spends its entire life dodging lions, cheetahs, crocodiles, snakes, and humans. If I were to rank animals based on their degrees of being cursed, a snake would be much less cursed than a gazelle.
The bottom line is that the “snake is cursed” narrative is nonsensical. Again, God did not write the bible nor did he instruct anyone to write. He is not a human being to write. If at all there is a god, it would apply uniformly across all forms of existence without manifesting human like qualities. Think of gravity, it does not see, talk, or instruct, it just operates and everything follows it. Fellow human beings living in a desert wrote the bible and claimed that god inspired them. Billions have been following their words since.
